New data from Cox Automotive shows which electric vehicles sold the most in the United States in 2025. The results highlight a clear leader in the EV market and show how far ahead some models are compared with the rest of the field.
The biggest takeaway is Tesla’s continued dominance. The Tesla Model Y was the best selling electric vehicle in the country in 2025, with more than 357,000 units sold. It finished far ahead of every other EV on the market, reinforcing its position as the most popular electric vehicle in America.
The Tesla Model 3 ranked second, with just over 192,000 units sold during the year. Together, the Model Y and Model 3 accounted for a large share of total EV sales, showing that Tesla’s core lineup still drives most consumer demand in the U.S. electric vehicle market.
After Tesla, sales numbers dropped sharply. The third best selling EV, the Chevy Equinox EV, sold fewer than 58,000 units. Other popular models such as the Ford Mustang Mach E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Honda Prologue followed, each posting solid but much smaller volumes compared with Tesla’s top two vehicles.
Pickup trucks and larger electric SUVs also appeared on the list. The Ford F 150 Lightning and Rivian R1S both made the top ten, showing steady interest in electric trucks and adventure focused vehicles, even as overall volumes remain lower than compact and midsize EVs.
From a market perspective, the data shows that scale and execution still matter most. Tesla’s ability to produce vehicles at high volume, keep pricing competitive, and deliver consistent software updates continues to translate into strong sales results year after year.
Looking ahead, this sales ranking signals that while competition in the EV space is growing, the gap between Tesla and the rest of the market remains wide. For rivals, closing that gap will require higher production, clearer product positioning, and stronger consumer trust in electric platforms.
